Celebrating Crow Nest Park!

PLEASE NOTE: The Festival will take place in Spring 2019 to ensure that as many people as possible can take part. A new date will be published soon.

In 1893, the people of industrial Dewsbury were granted a much needed Park that would be a place of recreation, gatherings and pride for the densely crowded population of the town, whatever their background or status in life. The Dewsbury Corporation bought the Mansion and surrounding 74 acres of parkland from local mill owners (the Haigh family) for £20,000 (£242,0000 in 2018) for the benefit of all local people. In the same year the Great Yorkshire Show was held in the Crow Nest Park.

The opening almost didn’t happen. Only two weeks before the Combs Pit Disaster occurred, in which 139 men and boys lost their lives. But the townsfolk rallied, raising thousands of pounds to care for the stricken families, and the opening of the Park lifted the town’s spirits.

The Curiosity Festival will celebrate and commemorate these events and aims to bring our town together again to curiously explore our cultures, heritage and shared values. With outdoor performances, craft and food stalls, community and business stalls, street theatre, Have A Go Activities, Competitions with brilliant prizes to be won, and much more!

Organised by the Volunteers of Friends of Crow Nest Park and Dewsbury Park Mansion Community Hub, we hope that this inaugural festival will be the first of many and put Dewsbury firmly on the map again.

Opportunities to support the festival and be involved will be published soon! In the meantime if you would like to be a part of the team that makes the festival happen, please complete the application form below to show your interest.
